NASA Deep Space Rover Components: Vacuum-Rated Transport
Challenge
JPL needed to transport sensitive Mars rover prototype components across country for assembly at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Components included scientific instruments, sample collection mechanisms, and electronic control units. Standard cases failed to provide: (1) sufficient ESD protection for sensitive electronics, (2) vibration isolation for road transport, (3) climate stability for thermal expansion-sensitive components, (4) tracking for chain-of-custody across multiple handlers.
Solution
KeXinMaterials provided custom vacuum-rated cases with: (1) anti-static ESD foam (10^6 ohm/sq surface resistivity), (2) Sorbothane shock mounts for vibration isolation, (3) thermal insulation with phase-change material, (4) integrated GPS tracker + tamper-evident seals.
